Google Translate Adds Offline Live Translate Support

Google Translate is adding offline support for Live Translate, according to Android Authority. The feature reportedly allows conversations between English and 10 other languages without a data connection, including French, German, Spanish, Hindi, Japanese and Russian.

Live Translate lets people talk directly with speakers of other languages, but until now it has required a data connection, Android Authority reported. The publication said the offline support is beginning to arrive.

Offline conversations are supported between English and French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian and Swedish, according to the report. That means English speakers can use the feature with speakers of those 10 languages without an active data connection.

Android Authority said phones are useful for unfamiliar situations, but many of those tools depend on an active data connection. That connection can be uncertain depending on where a user is going, making offline options important for critical tools such as Google Maps.

The report said Android Authority had spotted Google working toward another offline mode earlier this year, as the company prepared support for Live Translate without a data connection. In May, when the publication last examined Google's in-development efforts, it appeared that offline Live Translate support could be expected for at least English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Spanish.

The newly reported offline language set includes Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian and Swedish in addition to those earlier languages. Android Authority said the feature is now starting to arrive, but the report did not provide a detailed rollout timeline.
