Google turns Search's AI Mode into a travel planner with flight price alerts and hotel booking
Google is upgrading AI Mode in Search with flight price tracking, points/miles rates, and hotel booking, moving it closer to an AI travel agent.
Flight price tracking is now available in more than 180 countries and territories, according to Google. Users describe when and where they want to fly, and AI Mode displays options from more than 300 airlines and travel sites. If they ask the tool to track prices, Google will send them an email when fares change for their chosen destination and dates. Engadget reported that this feature is live in all locations and languages where AI Mode is available, except for countries and territories in the European Economic Area.
AI Mode can also display the cost of flights and hotels in points or miles. For example, a user can ask, "I want to travel from Atlanta to Miami using my AA miles," and the tool will show how many miles are needed to book matching flights. This capability is globally available, with initial support for Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, Choice Hotels International, Hilton, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. Support for Accor, Flying Blue, Hyatt, LATAM Airlines, and Lufthansa Group is coming soon, Google said.
Hotel booking through AI Mode has started rolling out in the U.S. in English, according to Google. Users can describe their trip and hotel preferences to get a list of options with guest reviews and key factors. After selecting a hotel, they can choose "Continue on Google" to complete the booking using Google Pay. The hotel or booking platform acts as the merchant of record and handles customer service. Launch partners include Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, with availability expanding over the coming weeks.
The updates build on AI Mode's existing trip-planning abilities, such as comparing live flight and hotel information and building itineraries. Now the feature moves closer to acting as an AI travel agent, according to Android Authority, though Google did not describe it in those terms.
