Google TV Streamer Gets 50% Price Hike While Amazon Cuts Fire TV Stick 4K to $19.99

Google raised its TV streamer price by 50% in the U.S., while Amazon dropped the Fire TV Stick 4K Select to $19.99, giving buyers a cheaper alternative.

TechRadar reported that the Google TV Streamer now costs $149 instead of $99, with the increase effective immediately. The price hike currently affects U.S. customers only, but TechRadar said similar rises are expected elsewhere because the reasons apply globally. Google attributed the increase to "rising component costs" and said it will also affect some Google Nest cameras and doorbells.

Google is not the first brand to raise streamer pricing as memory costs have skyrocketed. According to TechRadar, Apple, Roku, Fire TV and Onn have all increased prices, in some cases by even more than Google's 50%. However, the higher price makes the Google TV Streamer much less competitive, especially when compared with Amazon's Fire TV Stick models.

TechRadar noted that the difference between a $99 streamer and a $149 one is significant. Unless a user really needs Cast support, it may be wise to consider a rival device or wait for Apple to unveil the long-awaited successor to the Apple TV 4K, which is expected imminently. The Google TV Streamer was previously priced well below the Apple TV 4K, but its platform offers less privacy and includes ads. With the 50% price hike, it no longer looks like a bargain, while an Apple TV 4K costs only modestly more and offers an ad-free experience.

Android Authority reported that Amazon has cut the Fire TV Stick 4K Select to $19.99, down from its $49.99 recommended retail price, a 60% discount. While this is not the lowest price seen this year, it is below the lowest price of the last 30 days, which was $22.99. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select supports 4K Ultra HD playback with HDR10+, runs on Amazon's newer Vega OS, and includes Alexa voice control, AI-powered search, access to a broad catalog of streaming apps, free TV channels, live content, and 8GB of storage. It is designed for buyers who want straightforward 4K streaming without paying for Amazon's higher-end Fire TV sticks.

For a bedroom TV, guest room setup, or an older screen that needs a streaming upgrade, the Fire TV Stick 4K Select offers an easy way to add 4K features for under $20. This pricing contrast highlights how Google's price increase shifts the value proposition of its streamer, while Amazon's deal strengthens the appeal of its budget device.
