Google Unveils Gemini Agents as Always-On Digital Workers

Google unveiled Gemini Agents, always-on cloud AI agents that work toward goals and can get their own Gmail accounts.

Google has set out a vision in which AI agents become fully autonomous digital employees, with one central agent handling multiple types of work. The announcement comes shortly after similar agent announcements from Meta, which introduced Muse, and OpenAI, which introduced Dots. At the center of Google's approach is a shift from giving workers AI assistance to letting them delegate entire workloads to AI. The company says Gemini Agents can work on long-running tasks largely independently after a user shares an objective.

Because Gemini Agents run on Google Cloud infrastructure rather than on-device, Google says they are always-on and can continue running in the background even when workers are not at their desks. That cloud-based design is intended to let the agent keep working on a task while a user moves to other devices or steps away. Google is presenting Gemini Agent as the future of agentic AI, with the system able to operate without detailed instructions.

Google is not positioning Gemini Agents only as a workplace tool. The company says they are meant to serve as both a personal assistant and a digital colleague. For users who want to use them at work, agents can be assigned their own email addresses, calendars and Drive storage allocations, according to TechRadar.

Despite being a Google product running on Google Cloud, Gemini Agents are being opened up to work with models from Anthropic, with Google promising to add support for others in the future. "A future-proof platform that runs anywhere, executes any task, supports your choice of models, and applies enterprise control," Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said.

Google says the agents will also work across third-party platforms including Microsoft 365 and Slack, and on any device spanning iOS and Android, as well as macOS and Windows. The combination of cloud execution and cross-platform support is meant to let the agent operate in the tools and environments workers already use.

Gemini Agents are not generally available yet. Some customers can get early access through a private preview, TechRadar reported. Google is expected to share more details about use cases and other specifics as the product moves closer to general availability.
