Google warns outdated Android phones and some Calendar events may be an hour off as parts of Canada end clock changes

Outdated Android phones and some Calendar events may be an hour off when parts of Canada change clocks Nov. 1.

British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories will move to permanent daylight saving time on that date, ending seasonal clock changes in those regions. With the change a little more than a week away at the time of the report, Google is trying to help Android users in those areas, as well as anyone traveling through them, make the transition.

If the new rule had not taken effect, clocks in those regions would automatically turn back by an hour. Starting November 1, that will not happen. Android Authority reported that the seamless-sounding change carries a catch, particularly for users who have not updated their Android devices: phones running outdated software could incorrectly turn their clocks back by an hour.

Some Google Calendar events could also shift by an hour. Certain appointments will require manual corrections through the web version, according to the report. The shift ends the twice-yearly clock change for the affected Canadian regions, but it also creates initial technical headaches for users whose devices or calendars do not handle the new rule correctly.
