Google’s Gemini 3.8 Flash could launch soon with major coding upgrades, report says

Google is reportedly close to releasing Gemini 3.8 Flash, a new AI model with significantly improved coding capabilities, potentially rivaling Anthropic and OpenAI offerings.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, as covered by Android Authority, Google’s DeepMind research unit could release the model soon. Internal tests reportedly showed that Gemini 3.8 Flash performed better than Anthropic’s Opus, though the specific version of Opus was not disclosed.

The potential launch is part of Google’s broader push into AI-assisted software development. Earlier in March, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that 75% of Google’s code is now “vibe coded” and approved by engineers.

Google has also internally abandoned plans to release a separate Gemini 3.5 Pro model, according to the report. The next Pro model may only arrive with Gemini 4.0, suggesting a streamlined roadmap.

Gemini 3.8 Flash would likely face competition from tools such as Claude Cowork, which is powered by Anthropic’s Fable or Mythos models, xAI-owned Cursor, and ChatGPT’s Codex. Neither Google nor DeepMind has confirmed the launch date or provided official details.
