Google’s Live Translate for Android XR may add ‘Listening area’ mic controls

Android Authority reports Google is developing a ‘Listening area’ feature for Live Translate on Android XR, letting users choose between front-only and surrounding-area microphone modes.

According to the outlet’s exclusive app teardown, code traces show the feature will allow users to switch between Front-only and Surrounding-area microphone modes during Live Translate sessions. The report said this would provide extensive control over the microphones used by the translation tool.

The report noted that only one Android XR device is currently on the market, the Samsung Galaxy XR, but additional devices are expected. Google has already integrated core apps such as Google Maps, Photos, Gboard, and the Play Store with the Android XR platform.

Android Authority said it uncovered development on Live Translate for Android XR last year, and the newly identified “Listening area” functionality is a potential addition to that experience. As with any pre-release feature found in code, the company may change or abandon it before rollout.
