GrapheneOS delays overhauled Messages app, announces Android fixes

GrapheneOS is slightly delaying its overhauled Messages app to first ship an OS fix for volume bar and Private Space issues.

In a social post, the GrapheneOS team said it is working on a new OS version to resolve a volume bar UI regression caused by an upstream Android security preview patch. It also said it has fixed a UI issue affecting Private Space.

The team said the major Messages app release, which has been in development for months, has been “slightly delayed to after we make the OS release.” It did not explain why the decision was made. Responding to a commenter, the developers said there is no timeline for adding RCS support to the overhauled app.

The announcements come as GrapheneOS expands its work beyond the base operating system. The project, which focuses on de-Googling Android, is now building apps and privacy controls to further reduce Google’s reach. The updated Messages app and a secure paste feature are part of those efforts, according to Android Authority.
