GridCraft offers open-source Excel alternative across Linux, macOS and Windows
ArtCraft has built GridCraft, a free open-source spreadsheet app that mimics Microsoft Excel and runs natively on Linux, FreeBSD, macOS and Windows, ZDNet reports. It offers XLSX compatibility and 500-plus functions, but template support is limited.
GridCraft is free and open-source. ZDNet says it offers native XLSX compatibility, more than 500 calculation functions, charts and pivot tables, agent-native automation, copy-on-write workbooks with instant undo snapshots, incremental recalculation and a virtualized grid. The publication tested the app on Linux, macOS and Windows and said it performed the same and as fast on each platform. In one test, a spreadsheet with 1,000 rows opened without a hiccup.
ZDNet reported three sample spreadsheets in GridCraft: Household Budget, Quarterly Sales Dashboard and Gradebook. It said templates are the area where GridCraft differs most from Excel; the reviewer could not find a way to save a spreadsheet as an .xltx template file. As a workaround, the report suggests saving a spreadsheet as a CSV file in a self-created templates folder.
The reviewer opened an Excel spreadsheet containing a pivot table and said everything was in place and functioning. Still, ZDNet said GridCraft is not a one-to-one drop-in replacement for Excel and advised users to make a copy of their work before opening it in GridCraft, adding that the app should not be treated as production-ready.
ZDNet said it will use GridCraft for spreadsheets and has begun adopting all ArtCraft apps to replace similar software, with FilmCraft as the exception because of its prior investment in DaVinci Resolve and FilmCraft's missing color tools and node trees.
Editor's Summary GridCraft is a free, open-source spreadsheet app from ArtCraft that mimics Excel and runs natively on Linux, FreeBSD, macOS and Windows. ZDNet found strong XLSX compatibility and performance but limited template support, and it cautioned that the app is not yet production-ready.
