GTA 6 Runs at 30fps on Consoles, Can Take Up to 80 Hours to Beat, Rockstar Says
Rockstar confirms GTA 6 will launch at 30fps on consoles and can take up to 80 hours to finish, making it the studio's longest game yet.
TechRadar reported that Nelson told YouTuber Davy Jones, who visited Rockstar North for a preview, that the consoles are currently running the game at 30fps during development. Flow Games, citing an interview with Jones and translated via Kotaku, reported that Nelson said he still needs to consult the technical team about whether a 60fps option is possible at launch or in the future. Nelson also said he does not currently have details on resolution or ray tracing. Rockstar has not confirmed whether the game will run at 60fps on the PS5 Pro.
The game’s nearly 27-minute Extended Look, which premiered on Netflix and was later uploaded to YouTube, was confirmed to be running on a base PS5. That means the footage fans saw was also capped at 30fps. TechRadar managing editor Rob Dwiar said a 40fps mode on PS5 Pro could be a good balance given the game’s technical demands.
In an interview with The New York Times, Nelson said his playthrough took 80 hours, including the main story and “optional goals with narrative ramifications.” Those optional goals may push total playtime higher for players who explore Leonida, do side missions, and engage with the world. Nelson said he hopes players will step away for coffee, exercise, and social interaction, while also robbing places and making money in the game.
Engadget noted that How Long to Beat data shows most people took about 51.5 hours to finish GTA 5’s main story with some side quests, while completionists averaged 89.5 hours. GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S at a price of $80. Engadget also warned of an ongoing cyber attack campaign that encourages fans to download a fake GTA 6 demo, which instead installs infostealer malware that can access stored browser passwords.
