GTA VI Reportedly Needs a 210GB Download on PS5

A dataminer says Grand Theft Auto VI will require a 210GB download on PlayStation 5, with preloading from November 12 ahead of a November 19 launch.

The dataminer's post listed a standard edition priced at $79.99, a preload date of November 12 and a release time of midnight on November 19. According to the report, it is not yet known whether the 210GB covers only the game's files or also the temporary space an installer occupies on the drive, but either way the total is large.

For comparison, IGN reported that Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's previous open-world release, needed 149GB of free space to install on a PlayStation 4 in 2018, 61GB less than the reported GTA VI download. The figure is also more than half of the roughly 362GB of usable storage on a standard 512GB Xbox Series S. Insider Gaming noted that a possible day-one patch could add to the total, meaning some players may spend much of their first day with the game downloading files needed to run it.

Rockstar Games has previously acknowledged that Grand Theft Auto VI is a large game. Install sizes of this scale have become common for big-budget releases as graphical standards have risen and open-world structures and online multiplayer features have spread. Some publishers have tried to rein in footprints, as when Activision decoupled Warzone from its annual Call of Duty releases, but according to Engadget the problem is far from solved.

PlayStation Game Size said players will be able to preload the game from November 12, a week before release. For those planning to start playing at launch, Engadget suggested clearing space on the console's drive and downloading the game in advance.
