Hana Bank says 89 customers' data leaked in hacking attack

Hana Bank said an external hacking agent accessed its outdoor sales system and leaked the resident registration numbers, names, addresses and phone numbers of 89 customers, the latest breach to hit a South Korean financial institution.

The leaked information included resident registration numbers, names, addresses and phone numbers, the bank said. The breach occurred after an external hacking agent accessed the bank's "outdoor sales system."

A Hana Bank official said the lender had apologized to customers and would make utmost efforts to keep such an incident from happening again. The bank did not say when the intrusion was detected or how the hacking agent gained access to the system.

Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank were targeted in similar hacking attacks, according to Hana Bank, but no personal information was leaked because both lenders blocked unauthorized access to their systems.

The Hana disclosure came on the same day that industry sources said customer information of KB Kookmin Bank, a major commercial bank, had been breached. According to those sources, personal data of more than 100 KB Kookmin Bank customers had been stolen via hacking.

On Thursday, Shinhan Bank said personal information of around 25,000 customers, including annual income, names and phone numbers, had been leaked.

Friday's announcement by Hana Bank followed the Shinhan disclosure by one day, and the report on KB Kookmin came between the two confirmed incidents, placing three of the country's commercial banks in a sequence of hacking-related data leaks over two days.
