Harvard’s $699 Startup Bootcamp Uses AI Avatars to Give Feedback

Harvard Business School’s $699 Foundry bootcamp for entrepreneurs uses AI avatars from startup HeyGen to provide individual feedback during practice pitches, with students and instructors sharing mixed but largely positive reactions.

TechCrunch reported that New York Times reporter Sarah Kessler tried the experience by pitching an AI-generated copy of Flybridge Capital co-founder Jeff Bussgang. Both the real Bussgang and his digital version were unimpressed by her idea for an “Uber for bananas,” though Kessler said the virtual version offered a noticeably frozen smile during her pitch.

Project director Katharina Rings told TechCrunch that she initially envisioned the AI component as closer to a chatbot, but after Harvard released a trial version, students said they wanted a more guided experience. While some college students have expressed negative feelings about AI, Foundry participants told TechCrunch they like the avatars. Bussgang acknowledged that his digital copy is a little “creepy,” but said, “My students love it.”
