Homebase launches AI assistant for small-business scheduling and payroll
Homebase launches AI assistant for hourly-team small businesses, covering scheduling, payroll checks and screening.
According to Homebase, most owners are on the floor all day, so payroll and scheduling wait until they can get to a computer at night. The company said a task such as building a schedule or writing a job post can drop from hours to minutes, with the owner still signing off on the result.
Founder and Chief Executive John Waldmann said every owner he talks to has “the same 6 a.m. moment,” when an employee calls out sick and the day becomes a hunt for a replacement. In his view, most AI tools would stop at telling the owner that a shift is uncovered. He called the Homebase approach “AI that acts.”
In the sick-call scenario Waldmann described, the assistant works out which employees could cover. None of them is contacted before the owner gives the go-ahead, at which point the software takes over the outreach until somebody accepts the shift.
On the payroll side, timecards get a check before each pay run. Homebase said the assistant catches missing punches and similar errors early enough that an owner can sort them out in one go. Overtime trends get the same early warning, as do gaps between scheduled and actual hours, so staffing can be changed before the costs land.
Candidate screening is part of the package too. Reuben Pressman, founder and managing partner of Florida pickleball club St. Pete Athletic, said the club ran more than 3,000 job applications through Homebase’s AI-powered screening. He put the time saved at more than 1,000 hours. The process still turned up “the absolute best talent” for the team, he said.
The new product follows the hiring and scheduling assistants the company launched in June 2025, plus a payroll assistant that arrived later that year. Those tools have handled more than 4.7 million administrative tasks since launch, according to Homebase.
Shift cover is not new territory for the company. That earlier scheduling assistant was built to identify and rank replacements whenever a schedule changed.
Homebase is a venture capital-backed company with more than 150,000 small business customers. Bain Capital Ventures and Khosla Ventures were among the existing investors that came back when L Catterton Growth led its $60 million Series D round in April 2024.
