Homey adds OTA firmware updates for Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave devices
Homey now supports over-the-air firmware updates for Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave devices directly from its app, simplifying multi-brand smart home management.
The new capability, called Device Updates, will be available with Homey app version 9.10.0 and newer, as well as the Homey web experience. It aims to address the irritation of managing firmware updates for products from various brands in a mixed smart home setup.
In a blog post announcing the changes, Homey said owners of Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave devices can now download updates directly from the Homey app. Zigbee and Z-Wave updates will come from their respective apps within Homey, while Matter device owners will receive updates through the Connectivity Standards Alliance's Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL).
This move simplifies the update process for users who mix and match devices from different manufacturers, a common approach for budget flexibility but historically a pain point for firmware management.
