How to add a custom CarPlay intro with Shortcuts

To create the automation, you need an iPhone, the Shortcuts app and an audio file saved in the Files app. Engadget advises making a folder in the Files app, not in iCloud Drive, and saving the clip there. The clip should be short, about two to five seconds, so it doesn't interfere with navigation instructions or other important details.

The setup steps begin in the Shortcuts app: tap the Automation icon, create a new automation, select CarPlay, choose "Is Connected" and "Run Immediately," then tap "Next." From there, create a new shortcut, tap Files, select the File tab, browse to the folder you created, choose the sound effect and confirm with the blue checkmark. Engadget notes that steps can vary slightly by iPhone model and iOS version, as Shortcuts support goes back to the iPhone 5s.

After the automation is created, test it by connecting to CarPlay. If the clip plays too loudly or softly, make adjustments on the iPhone; the action may use the original volume levels from the recording.

To change the automation later, go back to the Shortcuts app, tap Automation and select the one you made. You can swap the audio file for another greeting, reorder actions or remove an action. If you want a break from the sound, you can change "Run Immediately" to "Don't Run" instead of deleting it. You can also add useful actions after the greeting, such as opening a navigation app, starting a commute playlist or showing morning reminders. Disconnect automations can pause media or launch walking directions when the car is turned off.
