How to add and remove cards from Apple Wallet
Apple Wallet can store cards, passes, keys and IDs. This guide explains how to add and remove them, including when the iPhone is lost.
To add a debit or credit card on an iPhone, open Wallet, tap the plus button and choose Debit or Credit Card. Users can hold a compatible physical card near the iPhone or manually enter its details. Wallet may also display cards used previously for quick re-addition. The card must come from a participating issuer, and the bank may require additional verification. If Wallet will not add the card, Apple recommends contacting the company behind it. The same plus menu also supports other cards such as transit passes and IDs, and items may be available under 'From Apps on Your iPhone'.
Most other content in Apple Wallet falls under 'passes,' including loyalty cards, coupons, gift cards, boarding passes, movie tickets and event tickets. Unlike payment cards, there is no general option to manually enter a number from any retailer's card. Instead, the retailer or issuer must support Apple Wallet passes. Users can add a pass from an app, website, email, QR code or AirDrop by tapping 'Add to Apple Wallet.' If the option is missing, Engadget notes Apple suggests contacting the pass issuer. Apple Gift Cards are separate: if the Apple Account card is in Wallet, open it, tap More and choose Redeem, then scan or enter the gift card code to add the balance.
Removing payment cards and passes works differently. A debit or credit card is removed by selecting the card, tapping the three-dot menu, choosing Card Details and then Remove Card. This removes it only from the current iPhone, not from other devices. A pass is removed by selecting it, tapping the three-dot menu and choosing Remove Pass, which permanently deletes it across all devices. Some expired passes are hidden rather than deleted; users can view or remove them under the Expired menu.
When an iPhone is lost or stolen, payment cards can be removed remotely without the phone in hand. On another device signed in to the Apple Account, open Settings, tap the user name, select the missing iPhone and choose Remove Items under Wallet & Apple Pay. Users can also do this from a browser. Alternatively, card issuers can be called. If Find My was enabled before the loss, marking the iPhone as lost suspends its payment cards and Apple Pay passes, which Engadget cites as a key benefit of digital wallets.
