How to AirPlay from iPhone or MacBook to your TV

To start AirPlaying from an iPhone or iPad, users should first verify that both the TV and the iPhone are on the same Wi-Fi network and that AirPlay is enabled on the TV, typically found in the TV's Settings menu under Network, Connections, and Apple AirPlay & HomeKit, though menu names may vary by brand. Once confirmed, open a compatible app such as Prime Video or Disney+, tap the AirPlay icon—a rectangle with an upward arrow—and select the target TV from the list. For services like YouTube, the cast symbol should be tapped first, then AirPlay selected from the resulting menu. For photos, the Share button leads to the AirPlay option, while for music, the AirPlay icon appears in the playback square on Control Center.

For users who frequently AirPlay to a specific TV, settings can be adjusted to make the connection automatic on devices with the latest OS. In Settings, go to General and AirPlay & Continuity, then choose under Automatically AirPlay: Never, Ask, or Automatic. Automatic initiates the connection without any action, while Ask waits for user confirmation before connecting.

When no AirPlay option is available, screen mirroring can be used. Swipe down from the top-right corner on an iPhone to open Control Center, tap the overlapping squares icon (or add it via the '+' at top left if missing), select the TV, and enter a passcode if prompted. This mirrors everything on the phone, including live navigation movements, and can also stream video from apps without AirPlay support. Users should rotate the phone horizontally and find full-screen mode for a better viewing experience.

The same principles apply to a MacBook. Verify AirPlay is on for the TV and both devices are on the same network, then go to System Settings, General, and AirDrop & Continuity, turning on AirPlay Receiver. Open content, tap the AirPlay icon (or Share icon if necessary), and choose the TV. Screen mirroring on a MacBook is initiated from Control Center in the menu bar, selecting Screen Mirroring and then the TV. An additional 'Change' option allows casting the entire screen, showing only an active window or app, or extending the display to use the TV as a second monitor.
