How to Clear the Cache on Your iPhone

A guide from Engadget explains methods to clear cache on iPhone, including browser steps, app-specific tools, and a restart for the system cache.

Engadget advises against clearing cache too often, as the iPhone quickly rebuilds it. In fact, constant clearing is counterproductive, and if a user is running low on storage — even with the new 256GB base configuration — deleting cache is only a very short-term solution.

For Safari, the default iPhone browser, the process removes cache along with browsing history, cookies, site permissions, and other related data. To do this, open Safari, tap the three-dot menu next to the address bar, select Bookmarks, then tap the clock icon to display history. After tapping the three-dot menu again, choose Clear, pick the desired time range and profile, and optionally enable Close All Tabs. The result is an all-or-nothing wipe: users must sign in again to websites, re-accept permission prompts such as notification requests, and may see slower page loads for a short time afterward.

Other iPhone browsers follow a similar pattern but often offer more granular controls. In Chrome, tapping the three-dot menu and selecting Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data opens a panel where users can pick a time range and choose which types of data to delete. Checking only "Cached images and files" restricts the action to cache, and Chrome shows the size of those files in the same menu. For faster future access, users can add "Delete Browsing Data" to the browser's edit menu.

iOS also keeps its own system cache to improve efficiency, but there is no direct way to clear it from the user interface. The only method to flush those temporary system files is to restart the iPhone. As described by Engadget, holding the Side button and either Volume button brings up the Power Off slider; after shutting down and waiting a minute or two, holding the Side button again boots the device. This simple action does not remove any permanent files.

Several apps, including Spotify, TikTok, Discord, and Telegram, offer direct options to clear their caches. Spotify users can go to Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline, where the cache size is displayed, and tap Clear next to Clear cache. Telegram's storage-usage tools go further: under Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage, users can see file-type breakdowns, set default clearing periods for different chat types, define a maximum cache size, and inspect per-chat storage.

For apps such as Instagram that lack built-in cache controls, users can resort to offloading the app via Settings > General > iPhone Storage. This deletes the app's program data while keeping personal documents and settings; the app can be reinstalled immediately with the Reinstall App button or later from the Home screen, where a cloud icon indicates an offloaded app. A full uninstall and reinstall is the most thorough option, but it requires users to sign in again and set up preferences from scratch.
