Absolute Bluetooth Volume works by having the phone send unattenuated audio and volume information to the Bluetooth sink, which then amplifies the audio according to that information. In theory, this allows users to control the master volume from the phone alone. In practice, mismatched volume scales between devices—such as a phone with 15 volume steps and a speaker with 100—can break the synchronization. Some Bluetooth devices also impose hearing protection caps when synced with Android, limiting output below the hardware's actual capability. Disabling the feature separates the two volume controls, allowing users to push each device to its own maximum and giving finer control over dynamic content like podcasts and audiobooks.

To disable Absolute Bluetooth Volume, users must first enable developer options. This requires going to Settings, scrolling to About phone (or System > About phone on some devices), locating Build number, and tapping it seven times. Samsung users will find Build number under About Phone > Software information. After entering the PIN or password, a confirmation message appears. Next, navigate to Settings > Developer options, scroll down to the Networking section, find "Disable absolute volume," and flip the toggle. The change takes effect after restarting the phone or disconnecting and reconnecting the Bluetooth device, after which the phone and device operate independent volume controls.

Engadget notes that while the feature works well for many users, it can cause issues that make disabling it worthwhile. The downside of turning it off is that users must manage two separate volume levels, and the approach is less useful for earbuds lacking physical volume controls. There is also a risk of hearing damage if both the phone and device are set to maximum output simultaneously.
