How to fix common Apple Wallet problems, from re-adding cards to checking settings

Engadget guide offers fixes for common Apple Wallet and Apple Pay problems, such as re-adding cards.

The guide notes that Apple Wallet stores credit and debit cards, transit cards, boarding passes and tickets. When a payment is declined or a card cannot be added, one of the most common causes is a card that expired or was reissued before Wallet updated. The first fix is to open the Wallet app, select the card, tap the three-dot button, go to Card Details and choose Remove Card, then add the card again with the plus sign. The guide warns that re-adding may require verification through a bank app or phone call.

For cards that have never worked, the guide says to confirm that the bank supports Apple Pay. It also recommends checking iPhone settings, including updating iOS to address software issues, and verifying the region because Apple Pay and Apple Cash are limited to certain countries and areas. Region settings can be found under Settings > General > Language & Region.

If problems continue, the guide advises enabling Face ID or Touch ID and making sure Contactless & Payments is switched on, and enabling two-factor authentication for the Apple Account. It also points out that some tickets and passes, such as certain gym passes or concert tickets, may not be compatible with Wallet; users can try apps like IntoWallet that create a pass from a QR code, while iOS 27 has a built-in generation feature.

As a final step, restart the device and check Apple's System Status page to see if iCloud or Wallet is experiencing an outage. If a service is down, the guide advises having the physical card available.
