How to Stop Siri From Interrupting You in CarPlay

Engadget shares tips on reducing Siri interruptions while using CarPlay, including Focus mode, notification settings, and disabling navigation guidance.

The most important toggle is the Driving Focus mode. Open Settings and go to Focus. If you don't see Driving, tap the Plus (+) icon at the top-right and add it. Inside the Driving focus, choose People and allow a short list of people to alert you. Use the Auto-Reply section to set a short message that goes to the selected group if they text you when you're using CarPlay. Scroll down to tap While Driving and make sure Activate With CarPlay is on.

To keep Siri quiet about notifications, go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications. Select CarPlay and disable Announce Messages so Siri won't read anything that comes in during a trip. On the same page, you can turn on Reply Without Confirmation to make sending a reply a single step, avoiding the assistant reading your message back for confirmation.

Another way to prevent stoppages is under Settings > Accessibility > Siri > Require "Siri" for Interruptions. Normally, Siri stops when it detects you talking back, but road noise or other people in the car can cause false detection. Enabling this option means Siri won't stop unless you say "Siri" to prompt it again. You can also change Siri Pause Time to Longer or Longest to give yourself more time to think.

Although Siri is required for CarPlay, you can turn off some forms of its activation. Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk to Siri and choose Off. Then you'll only be able to summon Siri by hitting the voice command button on your steering wheel or holding the Side button on your phone. In some cars, using the volume knob or your phone's volume buttons while Siri is talking will adjust only Siri's volume, not affecting music or other playback.

For navigation, spoken directions also interrupt what you're listening to. Apple Maps and Waze offer an easy way to disable audio guidance during navigation. Tap the screen during navigation to show buttons, then hit the speaker icon to choose between full guidance, alerts only, or no voice prompts.
