HP announces OmniBook 5 14 with OLED, aiming at Apple's MacBook Neo

HP has announced the OmniBook 5 14, a $699.99 Windows laptop with OLED across configurations, up to Intel Core 7, and a 42-hour battery claim. The company also introduced the ProBook 4 G2iS business notebook.

The OmniBook 5 14 can be configured with up to an Intel Core 7 350 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD, according to The Verge. Ports include two 10Gbps USB-C connections, HDMI, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The Verge reports a 1080p webcam and dual speakers. Engadget describes an FHD IR camera and two microphones. HP lists the laptop at 11.7mm thick and 2.56 pounds in The Verge's report, while Engadget says it measures 11.77mm and weighs just over 2.5 pounds. Both descriptions place it slightly thinner and lighter than the MacBook Neo.

OLED is standard on every configuration, but the reports disagree about the display details. The Verge says the base panel is a non-touch 1920 x 1200 OLED with 300 nits of brightness; a touchscreen version will be available when the OmniBook 5 launches in October, but a 2560 x 1600 OLED with 400 nits is not coming until March 2027. Engadget says the 2.5K display is a touchscreen and includes a flexible 180-degree hinge. Neither report includes hands-on testing of the final hardware.

Engadget reports that HP claims up to 42 hours of battery life per charge, based on local video playback, and says the laptop includes an integrated NPU for AI tasks. The Verge says the Wildcat Lake chips are likely to provide good-to-great battery life but notes that actual testing is still needed. The Verge also says the base configuration's OLED resolution and brightness are only passable, and that the OmniBook is not expected to beat the MacBook Neo in raw processing power based on prior Wildcat Lake reviews.

Alongside the OmniBook 5 14, HP announced the ProBook 4 G2iS business laptop. The Verge reports that HP calls it its thinnest business notebook at 0.47 inches / 12mm. It will also start with Intel Wildcat Lake chips, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD when it launches in December. HP has not announced pricing for the ProBook.
