HP Smart Tank 5003 Drops to $150 at Amazon Ahead of October Prime Day

Amazon has cut the HP Smart Tank 5003 ink tank printer to $150, its lowest price yet, ahead of October Prime Day. The Prime-only deal includes three years of free ink and targets home users seeking low-cost cartridge-free printing.

The Smart Tank 5003 is a wireless ink tank printer with print, scan and copy functions. TechRadar reported that the model is aimed at families, students and remote workers who want affordable cartridge-free printing. Its refillable ink reservoirs are intended to make running costs lower than those of traditional cartridge-based inkjets.

The printer comes with three years of free ink in the box. HP estimates that users can print up to 6,000 color or black pages using the free ink alone, according to TechRadar.

Performance is modest. TechRadar said the printer reaches up to 10 pages per minute in mono and 5 pages per minute in color. It has a 100-sheet paper tray and lacks auto-duplex printing, fax and an automatic document feeder. TechRadar said those limitations are not deal-breakers for home printing.

TechRadar said it has had good experiences with HP's printer line, describing the models as reliable and strong performers in tests. The publication also said ink tank printers are more economical than standard inkjet models for users who do not need a laser unit.

The Smart Tank 5003 offers the core features TechRadar looks for in home printers, including three-in-one functionality and wireless printing, along with free ink bottles so users can start printing immediately. The publication described the model as suitable for occasional printing of text documents, color documents and photographs.

TechRadar said the $150 price is below the previous low of $170 for this model. The deal requires an Amazon Prime subscription. A free 30-day Prime trial is available, and TechRadar reminded shoppers to cancel before the trial ends if they are using it only to access the promotion.

For buyers, TechRadar said the Smart Tank 5003 suits households that need a cheap-to-run printer for occasional documents and photos. It is less suitable for high-volume printing because of its speed and 100-sheet tray capacity. TechRadar said it is live-tracking additional October Prime Day home office deals.

Editor's Summary

The printer includes three years of free ink and offers cartridge-free printing with scan and copy functions, but it lacks auto-duplex, fax and an ADF and has a 100-sheet tray. The deal is limited to Prime subscribers.
