Huawei launches Mate 90 series with flagship τ chip and HarmonyOS 7
Huawei launched the Mate 90 series on Oct. 1, highlighting an in-house flagship τ chip, HarmonyOS 7, new imaging and display features, and a new version of “Dream It Possible.” The company framed the event as another step in its “moving forward with light” theme across software, chips and user experience.
At the center of the launch, Leiphone reported, is Huawei’s flagship τ chip, used across the Mate 90 series. Huawei presented the chip as supported by the Tao (τ) Law. Rather than treating process node as the main measure of performance, the company described a logic-folded chiplet stacking architecture with 125TB/s cross-die bandwidth and a 30% reduction in critical-path latency. On the Mate 90 Pro Max, Huawei said overall performance improved by 31% compared with the previous generation.
Huawei also pointed to HarmonyOS as a second long-term technology path. Leiphone reported that devices running HarmonyOS have surpassed 90 million, and that HarmonyOS 7 has matured with system-level AI, the Star Shield security architecture and smoother interaction. The report described the ecosystem as having moved from laying a foundation to expanding at scale.
In hardware, the Mate 90 Pro Max carries an 18EV ultra-high-dynamic main camera, a 200-megapixel large-sensor telephoto camera and third-generation Red Maple true-color imaging, according to the report. Huawei also introduced the Ruiying Z10 10x zoom module camera, with a 1-inch sensor and 1x to 10x continuous optical zoom. The phones use an all-Kunlun Xuanwu protection architecture covering the screen, body and lenses, a second-generation Linglong display with peak brightness of 12,000 nits, and an industry-first Wi-Fi and cellular fusion antenna architecture with four-card, triple-standby support.
Leiphone said the launch continued a pattern in which “Dream It Possible” has marked major Mate moments. The song accompanied Mate 8 in 2015; Mate 40 in 2020, with its “Together we can” and “Populus euphratica spirit” messaging and a new Dawn Edition; Mate 50 with the line “Cross mountains and seas, finally see dawn”; and Mate 60 in 2023, when satellite communications and the return of Kirin chips signaled Huawei’s terminal comeback. Later, Mate 70 emphasized AI features, and Mate 80 emphasized outdoor exploration mode and the Linglong display.
Before the event, Huawei also released a video titled “Its Own Light Will Shine,” and on the day of the launch it released “Salute to the Resolve to Move Forward with Light,” according to the report. The videos featured Mate users, developers, partners and companies in the Chinese semiconductor supply chain.
According to Leiphone, Huawei’s presentation placed the Mate 90 series within a 13-year brand narrative that has moved from persistence in adversity to technology breakthroughs and collaboration. The report said the company’s message was that “one light” from Huawei and “tens of millions of lights” from users and partners are moving forward together.
