Humanoid Robot Beats Usain Bolt's 100-Meter Record at Beijing Games

A Chinese humanoid robot ran 100 meters in 9.39 seconds at the World Humanoid Robot Games, surpassing Usain Bolt's 9.58-second human world record.

Developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, Tiangong Ultra overtook Honor's Lightning robot, which finished the sprint in 9.47 seconds. Engadget reported that the robots needed human assistance after their runs, slamming into pads and even being stretchered off the course. The outlet said these humanoid robots are not ready for commercial use.

Saturday's performance was a significant improvement over the inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games last year, when Tiangong Ultra won the 100-meter dash in 21.5 seconds.

The same event also included a half-marathon in Beijing for humanoid robots produced by Chinese companies. Honor's Lightning robot took gold in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, a time that Engadget said also surpassed another human record. The World Humanoid Robot Games, running from August 22 to 26, has drawn thousands of robot participants competing in track and field, soccer, table tennis, and boxing.
