iFi Builds a Hi-Res DAC and Headphone Amp Into a USB-C IEM Cable

iFi's new Go Cable puts an ESS Sabre DAC and a 70mW headphone amp inside a USB-C cable that ends in 0.78mm two-pin connectors for in-ear monitors. It pre-orders at $79 and ships September 21.

The Go Cable runs from a USB-C connection at one end, through the DAC and amplifier, to two 0.78mm two-pin analogue connectors at the other. The in-ear monitors themselves are not included, so buyers supply their own. The combination is positioned as a cheaper, more customizable alternative to wired earbuds with fixed drivers.

Inside, the cable uses an ESS Sabre DAC chip. It supports 32-bit/384kHz PCM and DSD256, and outputs 70mW into 32 ohms. iFi says its THD Compensation reduces distortion, while the Sabre chip's dynamic range enhancement is claimed to improve sound by up to 6dB. TechRadar notes the specifications are close to those of iFi's existing Go Link 2 dongle.

The cable also carries a microphone plus playback and volume controls. iFi describes the Go Cable as suitable for smartphones and laptops as well as gaming hardware such as the Switch 2, and says the microphone works for voice calls when the cable is plugged into a controller or handheld.

The pitch rests less on the spec sheet than on consolidation. Most portable DAC and amp combinations require a source device, a separate converter, and a separate pair of headphones or earbuds. By combining the converter and amplifier into the cable, the Go Cable reduces the number of items a listener needs to carry and pack.

Because the cable requires separate IEMs, it will not suit every buyer. iFi is also offering a starter kit that adds a pair of AIRO Astra earbuds for $20 / £20 (about AU$40) more. TechRadar reports that works out to roughly half the usual price of the AIRO Astra, and the same cable can later be used with a more expensive pair of monitors.
