iFixit Gives AirPods 5 a 2/10 Repairability Score, Calls Case a Disaster

iFixit described the AirPods 5 as "the most repairable AirPods earbuds ever," while its video carried the title "We've Given AirPods 0/10 for 10 Years. Until Now." The final score remained low because of the charging case, which iFixit called a "disaster." The case was sealed so tightly that it had to be destroyed to reach the internal battery, and Apple provided no replacement parts or repair manuals, pushing the score down.

The earbuds showed a more positive change. Their batteries are not soldered in place; instead, they use plug-in prongs, making replacement simpler. iFixit also found that the AirPods could be opened with a hairdryer and a clamp, so specialized tools are not required. That lowers the barrier for repairers.

iFixit said, "for the first time, we think skilled technicians and even intrepid DIYers will probably be able to replace AirPod batteries with a decent success rate." The firm contrasted Apple's design with products such as Fairphone's Fairbuds, which make the case battery easier to access and replace, and Sennheiser's Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds, which are built with replaceable batteries and come with a compatible screwdriver. As iFixit pointed out, Apple's AirPods do not necessarily need to be this hard to repair.

Apple CEO John Ternus has said the company tries to balance durability and repairability, arguing that focusing too much on repairability can compromise durability, including waterproofing. He has also noted that most consumers are not interested in opening their Apple products to perform repairs. For users who do want to repair devices or pay someone to do so, however, a more repairable product can last longer and avoid quick replacement.

According to TechRadar, iFixit's conclusion is that the AirPods 5 are not designed for casual users to open, but for experienced technicians and determined DIYers they represent a step in the right direction from Apple.
