Ikea's Badkruka Bluetooth speaker arrives in the US at $59.99 with an optical input
Ikea's Badkruka Bluetooth speaker is on sale in the US for $59.99, a wall-powered model with an optical input.
Standing almost seven inches tall, the boxy Badkruka is not designed with portability in mind. It has no rechargeable battery, so it has to be used within reach of a power source. That is a break from the Kallsup, which Ikea introduced earlier this year as a small, colorful speaker.
Color choices are narrower as well. The Badkruka comes in a black plastic finish or a pink version whose surface closely resembles a wood grain texture. Ikea has not said whether more colors will follow.
The speaker connects wirelessly to mobile devices over Bluetooth. Like the Kallsup, it can also be linked to a number of other speakers that support multi-speaker mode, a configuration intended to fill a home or a larger space with sound. Two Badkruka units can be paired with each other for stereo playback. The speaker supports Spotify Tap and ships with three EQ modes tuned to different music genres.
For buyers who would rather not go wireless, Ikea includes an optical cable. That allows the Badkruka to be connected to home theater gear, a television or a PC's TOSLINK port, which extends its use past streaming from phones and tablets.
At $59.99, the Badkruka costs well above the $10 Kallsup while offering a larger cabinet, additional inputs and more playback options. Its US launch makes Ikea's speaker line available at two price points, one aimed at small, portable use and the other at fixed setups that pair with a TV or computer.
