Improve Android Auto audio: Check apps and car settings before blaming cables
Engadget explains why faster USB cables won't improve Android Auto audio, and where to really look: music app quality, EQ settings, wired/wireless testing and car audio controls.
According to Engadget, a broken or poorly built cable can cause dropouts and disconnects, and Google does recommend trying a high-quality or replacement cable when wired Android Auto misbehaves. But additional bandwidth, such as a 5Gbps cable, will not make an intact digital audio stream sound better.
The first area to check is the music app. On a weak cellular connection, streaming quality can drop if the app adjusts quality based on the network. Downloading playlists or albums in advance is one of the easiest fixes. Spotify's Automatic setting adapts to the connection, while YouTube Music lets Premium subscribers choose a separate streaming quality for downloads.
Android supports playback sample rates up to 192kHz, but Engadget notes that Google does not provide a universal Android Auto output rate to confirm the car is actually receiving 192kHz audio, and higher numbers do not necessarily help.
Equalizer and normalization settings deserve more attention. An earbud-oriented profile with bass boost can sound odd in a car speaker setup, particularly if the vehicle adds bass boost, surround processing or its own EQ. Spotify can also affect other apps on Android phones with a built-in equalizer. Engadget suggests flattening EQ, setting Loud normalization to Normal or off, and playing a familiar downloaded track before adding adjustments back one by one.
For troubleshooting, Engadget suggests using wired and wireless connections to isolate the cause. Wireless Android Auto uses both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, not simply Bluetooth for music, so looking for aptX, LDAC or other Bluetooth codecs in developer options is not the right starting point. If playback is choppy, try the same downloaded song over wired Android Auto. If it sounds good, the issue is the wireless connection. If wired playback also fails, the cable becomes a suspect, and a known good cable should be used without hubs or extensions.
The last place to check is the vehicle itself. Turning off bass boost, surround mode and other enhancements, and flattening the car's EQ, can reveal whether the car is altering the sound. Each infotainment system has a different menu path, and some hide these controls. For aftermarket receivers, checking for a firmware update may also help. Wireless Android Auto additionally requires a compatible phone with 5GHz Wi-Fi support.
