Intel Arc G3 Handhelds Deliver Big Performance Gains, but Come at a Cost
Intel's Arc G3 handhelds show major performance leaps in early benchmarks, but high prices may limit their appeal.
The arrival of AI-powered upscaling and frame generation has become essential for PC gaming in 2026. Intel's XeSS 3 is Team Blue's latest version of this technology, and its integration into the Arc G3 lineup means that features like MFG are no longer limited to high-end PCs but are now available on handheld devices. The company claims its partner devices can deliver up to 11 hours of gameplay while being "up to 42% faster than the competition on average."
The Intel Arc G3 Extreme chips are built on four core pillars: performance, integration, efficiency, and software. Early internal benchmarks compare the G3 Extreme at 35W against the previous-generation Arc graphics found in the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V at 30W. In 1080p with High settings, the newer silicon shows a performance gap of 18% to 47% depending on the game. Intel claims the G3 Extreme is on average 44% faster, and it can now achieve stable 60 FPS in demanding titles like Battlefield 6, Pragmata, and Baldur's Gate 3.
Comparisons with AMD's Z2 Extreme chip, as seen in the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, also favor Intel. At 35W, the G3 Extreme shows a 42% average improvement in 1080p High settings with upscaling enabled. In some cases, the Intel chip nearly doubles the performance of the previous fastest handheld chip, with figures such as 56 FPS versus 37 FPS in Death Stranding 2 and 100 FPS versus 67 FPS in Arc Raiders.
The G3 Extreme also performs well at lower power levels. At 17W, it is still 24% faster than the Ultra 7 258V, making 30 FPS and above possible in many demanding games, and 60 FPS in titles like Resident Evil Requiem and Diablo 4. At 12W, playability has historically been challenging, but the new chip shows promise at that level as well.
However, TechRadar notes that this performance comes at a cost, and the high price could bury the appeal of these devices completely. While the early benchmarks are impressive, the affordability of the Intel Arc G3 handhelds remains a major concern for potential buyers.
