iOS 27.2 RC Hands-On: HomePod Sound Glow, Lock Controls, TV App Profiles

9to5Mac's iOS Decoded tests iOS 27.2's HomePod Sound Glow light show and Lock Controls, plus TV app profiles, Messages Suggested Actions and Apple TV Home Theater assets.

The feature uses the LED matrix under the HomePod's touch sensor, which contains 19 RGB LEDs on the HomePod mini and 37 on the second-generation full-sized HomePod. With Sound Glow enabled, that matrix becomes a color-matched canvas built from the current album artwork, glowing and pulsing with the audio and responding to changes in bass and treble. Ambient recordings in the Soundscapes collection, such as rain, forest and fireplace, use separately designed RGB animations instead of the Sound Glow audio pipeline, because those sounds behave differently from music, 9to5Mac reported.

The toggle appears in the Home app under HomePod settings once both the speaker and the controlling iPhone are updated to 27.2. According to the review, Sound Glow works on the first-generation HomePod mini and the second-generation full-sized HomePod, not only on the recently announced HomePod mini 2. The reviewer described the effect as vivid but not very bright, producing distinctive color combinations for individual songs without illuminating a room.

iOS 27.2 also introduces Lock Controls, which disables touch input on the HomePod's top surface, including tap, touch and hold, and the volume controls. A touch while the setting is on triggers a red animation that shakes back and forth. According to 9to5Mac, timers, intercom alarms, Check In and FaceTime calls remain operable by touch when the surface is locked, and household members can still reach Siri by voice or from another iOS device. The reviewer cited a cat that paws at the top cap and starts playback as a practical case for the setting.

The TV app in iOS 27.2 gains support for creating and switching between profiles, a capability already available on tvOS. 9to5Mac said the option is useful when children watch content on a parent's phone through the TV app, since switching to a child profile keeps that viewing out of the parent's Up Next queue.

Messages receives Suggested Actions, a feature that appeared in early iOS 27 betas but was pulled before that release shipped. It proposes actions based on the content of a conversation, such as an Open in Maps suggestion for a pasted address or an Add to Calendar suggestion for a typed date. Users can turn individual suggestion types on or off under Settings, Messages, Suggested Actions, covering Calendar, Reminders, Notes, Show in Maps, and Flight and Packages suggestions; suggestions that go unused stop appearing after a month, according to the report.

The hands-on video also examines assets and sounds tied to Apple TV's new surround-sound Home Theater functionality, which 9to5Mac said offer a look at how the setup process works.
