iOS 27 Adds CarPlay Video and Siri AI, but Full Access Needs Newer iPhones

iOS 27 adds CarPlay video and Siri AI, but full access requires newer iPhones, Engadget reports.

The compatibility gap is central to the update. Because CarPlay runs entirely on the iPhone, older models do not have the hardware needed to power Siri AI in the car, Engadget reported. An iPhone 14 owner, for example, will get the new mini-player, progress bar and wallpapers after updating to iOS 27, but not the new Siri experience. Owners of iPhones older than the iPhone 11 cannot install iOS 27 at all; their CarPlay systems will keep working with the features they already support.

For compatible phones, the biggest addition is video support. CarPlay’s entertainment options had been limited to audio services such as Apple Music and Spotify, but drivers can now watch video on the vehicle’s display. The feature detects motion and becomes available only when the car is parked. If playback is under way and the car starts moving, it automatically switches to audio-only until the vehicle stops. Vehicle manufacturers must implement support for the feature, so apps such as YouTube or Netflix may not work in a given car right away.

The Now Playing screen has a mini-player with album artwork, playback controls and a progress bar. Drivers can swipe to skip forward or backward through a song or podcast without reaching for the iPhone. Apple also says CarPlay has become more reliable in iOS 27, with a more consistent wireless connection and more accurate GPS location reporting.

Navigation apps can share route data with the vehicle, including information such as electric-vehicle charging stops. That lets the car cross-check arrival times with Google Maps and Apple Maps and suggest charging locations along the route. Apple has added new wallpapers as well.

Siri AI is available in CarPlay for users with compatible hardware. Engadget reported that it works much as it does on other Apple devices: it can answer general-knowledge questions, use personal context from emails, messages and calendar, and take natural-language requests for Apple Maps directions, such as avoiding tolls. A driver could ask for directions to a restaurant that someone recommended in a conversation.

Siri AI is not available in the European Union because of local regulations, according to the report. EU users with a compatible iPhone will still receive the other new CarPlay features but will not get Siri AI. Engadget also noted that users who have updated to iOS 27 can check several settings to improve their CarPlay experience.

Editor's Summary

Apple’s iOS 27 update adds video support, a mini-player with a progress bar, new wallpapers, route-data sharing and Siri AI to CarPlay, Engadget reported. Full Siri AI access requires an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 and later, and the feature is unavailable in the EU. Older iPhones can keep using CarPlay with existing features but cannot access the new Siri experience.
