iOS 27 Adds Custom Wallpaper Creation Through Image Playground

iOS 27 adds AI wallpapers via an overhauled Image Playground, accessible from the wallpaper picker, 9to5Mac reports.

Users can open the wallpaper gallery by going to Settings, then Wallpaper, then Add New Wallpaper, or by long-pressing the Lock Screen and tapping the plus button. In the gallery, Image Playground appears as an option in the top row. iOS 27 also automatically adds some AI-generated images to the Featured wallpaper section.

9to5Mac reported that the suggested wallpapers can be based on a user's own photos but rendered in a new style. In the publication's testing, the iPhone prepared stylized versions of favorite photos with no effort from the user, and the results looked suitable as wallpapers.

AI-generated wallpapers in the gallery are marked with Apple's new Image Playground icon. The label is intended to make clear where an image came from. If a user likes one of Apple's suggested AI wallpapers, they can select it and use it.

Users can also make fully custom wallpapers by tapping the Image Playground button in the top row. Image Playground asks the user to describe the desired image, according to 9to5Mac, and it optionally lets them choose a style or base the image on an existing photo or person. Once the image is created, it is automatically sized for an iPhone wallpaper.

9to5Mac said the overhauled Image Playground now offers more powerful image-generation capabilities and far fewer restrictions than before. It also can create images in the perfect wallpaper size. The publication noted that users do not need to open the standalone Image Playground app to make a wallpaper, because the process can begin directly in the wallpaper picker.

Apple has introduced new iPhone wallpapers every year, and iOS 27's additions can be downloaded. The update adds a separate creation option on top of those built-in choices. 9to5Mac also asked readers whether they have tried iOS 27's new wallpaper creation tool.
