iOS 27 Adds Inline Replies and Full Tapback Support for RCS in Messages

iOS 27 brings two RCS 2.7 upgrades to Apple’s Messages app: inline replies and full Tapback support, improving reactions and threaded replies between iPhone and Android users.

The changes are part of the RCS 2.7 standard, 9to5Mac reported. Apple had not implemented them until iOS 27. Inline replies work like they do in iMessage: a user can respond to a particular message, and the reply appears in line for everyone in the conversation, whether they are on iPhone or Android.

Full Tapback support changes how reactions appear on Android devices. Previously, when an iPhone user reacted to media, Android users could see messages such as 'Ryan loved an image,' 9to5Mac said. With proper Tapback support, that text message is no longer necessary.

Apple’s iOS 27 user guide lists the RCS features that Messages now supports: 'read receipts, typing indicators, Tapbacks, inline replies, and high-resolution photos and videos,' according to 9to5Mac.

iOS 27 also includes other Messages updates, such as more personalized Smart Replies and a Drawing app for iPhone Duo, 9to5Mac reported. The RCS improvements follow end-to-end encryption support that launched earlier in the year, bringing RCS closer to the iMessage experience.
