iOS 27 Adds Rebuilt Siri AI, Grammar Proofreading, and Overhauled Search

Apple this week launched iOS 27 for iPhone, adding a rebuilt Siri AI, automatic proofreading with grammar checks, and a new search foundation across Spotlight, Photos, and Mail, according to 9to5Mac.

According to 9to5Mac, iOS 27's Siri AI is not just a minor upgrade. Apple says it "tore [Siri] to the ground" and "rebuilt it from the ground up." The new Siri can be asked about anything, in the way users might ask Google or ChatGPT, and it provides informed, helpful answers. It can also perform more actions on the iPhone than before and works seamlessly and consistently across all of a user's devices. There is also a dedicated Siri app to hold conversations. The report's author said they had used the new Siri for three full months and that it had become a daily go-to.

The iPhone has long offered a basic spellcheck feature that underlines words it identifies as misspelled. In iOS 27, 9to5Mac reported, Apple is expanding proofreading in two ways: spellcheck is now powered by Apple Intelligence, and there is a new tool for checking grammar. With AI applied to spellcheck, even a word that is technically spelled correctly may prompt suggested replacements if the iPhone thinks the word is being used incorrectly. Misspellings are typically underlined in red, while suggested word replacements and grammar issues are underlined in blue. The report said this makes them feel more like optional suggestions than in-your-face warning signs. Users who do not want the feature can disable proofreading in Settings.

Search is one of the most essential features for most apps and for the iPhone as a whole, and iOS 27 gives Spotlight search a major overhaul, according to the report. In addition to fully integrating Siri with Spotlight, the systemwide search has been rebuilt with a more comprehensive index of the user's content that stays up to date throughout the day. The report said Spotlight should be more useful than ever because it offers better and more relevant results with every search. Apple says the same new search foundation powering Spotlight has been implemented in the Photos and Mail apps, upgrading search across those key apps. In the report's testing, the difference was noticeable.
