iOS 27 and watchOS 27 leaks hint at pro camera features and richer fitness tracking

Leaked code points to pro iPhone camera features and richer Apple Watch workouts before Apple's Sept. 9 event.

MacRumors forum member pdfu, whose findings were detailed by 9to5Mac and TechRadar, said the iOS 27 Camera app contains references to waveform and histogram displays for judging exposure, focus peaking that highlights in-focus areas, and a zebra-style warning for clipped highlights. The same code points to a manual focus slider, a repeated self-timer mode, and an image-processing change that would adjust lens corrections depending on aperture. None of the functions are currently active in any of the betas.

The aperture-related processing would fit earlier rumors that at least one lens on the iPhone 18 Pro will use a variable aperture. TechRadar also reported that the manual focus control appears to be locked to phones that ship with iOS 27 or later, which would rule out current models. It is unclear whether the other camera features, if they ship, would be exclusive to the new iPhones or come to older devices.

Pdfu separately posted findings from watchOS 27 that 9to5Mac covered. Those findings point to a new Readiness app, richer strength-workout logging, a new optical-sensing system for upcoming Apple Watch hardware, and 128GB of storage in the next S-class chip. The strength-workout code is described as being able to store repetition counts, weight, equipment, body side and duration for individual sets, and to represent a workout as a session with multiple sets and varying loads.

TechRadar writer Alex Blake said that if the strength-workout report is accurate, Apple's Workout app could finally catch up with dedicated apps such as SmartGym. He wrote that he currently has to track gym routines in the Notes app because Workout records only a single block of exercise with no way to log reps and sets.

9to5Mac, while cautioning that Apple has historically kept advanced tools out of its stock camera app and might instead put them in Final Cut Camera, said the code report appears credible. The feature set should become clearer after Apple's September 9 event, though the company has not commented on the leaks.
