iOS 27 Brings Siri AI, Video Apps and New Design Touches to CarPlay

Apple's iOS 27 adds rebuilt Siri AI, developer-built video apps, a new MiniPlayer, audio scrubbing, refreshed icons and new wallpapers to CarPlay, though in-car video still requires automaker support.

The Siri overhaul is the headline addition to iOS 27, and the new Siri AI capabilities reach CarPlay when paired with a compatible iPhone. On the car screen it appears as a glowing orb at the bottom center, a return to the look that preceded iOS 18 but with less color. 9to5Mac said that in its testing the assistant handles questions of many kinds in the manner of ChatGPT and Google Gemini, and keeps track of the context of an ongoing conversation better than earlier versions.

Conversations held through CarPlay sync automatically to the Siri app on the iPhone, where the full history can be browsed. Exchanges that took place in the car are marked with a car icon in that history.

Video in the car first appeared with iOS 26, but it was limited to AirPlay streaming. With iOS 27, developers can build dedicated video apps for CarPlay so that users can browse videos directly on the car display. Apple described the change in a WWDC session aimed at developers, saying that apps supporting AirPlay video streaming need no changes, and that developers can now let people browse their favorite videos from the iPhone on the CarPlay display. The company added that the capability applies to new cars that support the video-in-car feature. Automakers have to sign on to support it, so it will not be available automatically in every vehicle.

Several design changes accompany the release. Media apps now show a MiniPlayer in the top-right corner, offering artwork and player controls in place of the earlier waveform icon. The Now Playing screen supports audio scrubbing for music, audiobooks and podcasts, with a larger progress indicator modeled on the iPhone design. App icons have been redrawn with the Liquid Glass styling introduced across iOS 27, and those icons carry over to CarPlay. New CarPlay wallpapers are also available, resembling those shipped with iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate.
