iOS 27 Public Beta: Create an Archived Backup First, Says Engadget

Ahead of the iOS 27 public beta, Engadget advises iPhone users to back up and archive their data using a computer to avoid loss and ensure smooth downgrades.

Engadget notes that Apple typically unveils new iOS versions at WWDC in June, with public betas arriving before the fall official release. This year's iOS 27 update brings the long-awaited Siri AI and improves the Liquid Glass design, but the pre-release software may still be unstable.

The publication explains that iCloud backups, while convenient, are not ideal for beta testers because they automatically update and will eventually encode the beta version, which cannot restore an iPhone running an older stable iOS. Instead, it recommends connecting the iPhone to a computer to make a full backup and then archiving that backup to prevent it from being overwritten.

On a Mac, users can find their device in Finder, while Windows users should use the Apple Devices app. After opening the General tab, they are advised to select “Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac/computer” and optionally enable encryption to include sensitive information such as passwords and health data. When the backup completes, the guide says to right-click the newest backup and choose “Archive.”

If the beta causes problems, Engadget says reverting to a stable iOS is possible. Users must manually download the latest stable IPSW file from IPSW.me, connect their iPhone to a computer, put it into Recovery Mode, and restore using the downloaded file. After the restore, the archived backup can be applied to recover all pre-beta data.
