iOS 27's iPhone Handoff lets two iPhones share one number — Android should copy it

The report says the key distinction from Apple’s existing Continuity features is that iPhone Handoff could work at the network level, not strictly over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. If implemented that way, the companion phone could stay fully connected even when the primary iPhone is turned off. Android, by contrast, has no comparable feature in development for network-level phone-number sharing.

Carrying more than one handset is far from common, the report acknowledges. Most people have a single phone in their pocket, and many put two SIMs in the same phone to reduce the number of devices they need. Still, a meaningful group, including phone reviewers, regularly ends up with two or more phones. Keeping the same phone number active on these devices has been nearly impossible, and managing multiple phones can be difficult.

Android Authority argues Google should copy the approach for Android. Network-level number sharing would ease multi-device friction across Android’s varied hardware and use cases: foldables, camera phones, gaming handhelds, tablets and even laptops. The article also notes Apple may be offering the feature as the foldable iPhone Ultra approaches, giving it another way to justify the two-phone workflow it targets.
