iOS 27's Spatial Reframing adds a stranger to a Redditor's horse photo, exposing AI editing limits

The user, posting as friendofmany, said the tool added a "random dude" to a photograph of a horse. According to the account, the original image contained only "a tiny bit of hat peeking out behind the horse." When the poster dragged the focal point to reframe the shot, that scrap of headgear was expanded into a complete, non-existent human being — someone the poster did not recognize and described as a "full rando."

Apple says Spatial Reframing allows users to produce a more satisfying composition without having to go back and capture the moment again. Activating the feature lets a user drag a finger across a photo, and the angle of the shot shifts accordingly. Because the camera then appears to have been pointing in a new direction, the system has to generate image content to fill areas that were never actually captured.

TechRadar reports that the horse photograph is not an isolated case, and that the problem also occurs with inanimate subjects. In the publication's own testing, reframing photos of buildings and busy streets sometimes led the AI to add features such as windows and ledges that were not present in real life. The author wrote that the additions were visible at the time of shooting, making the gap between the edited image and the real scene plain.

The episode illustrates the constraints of current AI image-editing tools, which predict plausible-looking content rather than recovering real detail. TechRadar reported that as such features become more common on Apple's phones and in daily use, similar hallucinations are likely to keep appearing, and concluded that Spatial Reframing could use more work even as it makes its debut in iOS 27.
