iOS 27 Users Find Siri Unchanged as Rebuilt Assistant Stays Behind a Waitlist

Users who install iOS 27 and try to hold a conversation with Siri still get passed off to ChatGPT or handed a list of web links instead of a direct answer, the report said. The reason is that the standard Siri on the system has not been replaced by the version Apple has demonstrated, and Apple's own naming does little to make the distinction obvious.

iOS 27 does ship a set of Apple Intelligence features, while Siri AI (Beta) is a distinct product that users must apply for and that is granted to them in turn. Writing Tools remain available without the beta, and the update adds Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, plus Call Context, which can surface details such as an airline confirmation code while a call is in progress, along with improved Smart Replies, Mail suggestions and suggested polls.

Visual Intelligence also works without Siri AI. Pressing and holding the Camera Control button activates it, letting users ask ChatGPT by voice or text about what the camera is looking at, search for similar objects through Google, identify plants, translate text and turn dates on posters or flyers into calendar events. A screenshot-based onscreen version offers Ask, Search and Summarize tools plus actions such as Add to Calendar, though the report describes it as somewhat clunky.

The capabilities reserved for Siri AI (Beta) are broader. Apple says the assistant gains world knowledge with conversational answers rather than heavy reliance on search or ChatGPT, personal context that can retrieve items buried in Mail, Messages, Photos and Notes from natural descriptions, and onscreen awareness so users can ask about what they are looking at without taking a screenshot. It also promises deeper app actions, such as finding information and then drafting an email or editing and sharing a set of photos, and generative writing in which Siri itself composes, rewrites, proofreads and critiques text instead of using the separate Writing Tools.

The beta adds a dedicated Siri app on the home screen, with conversations synced privately through iCloud so a session can begin on one Apple device and continue on another, and Visual Intelligence invoked by asking Siri rather than launched separately. On supported hardware, Apple says a new on-device model provides more expressive voices with customizable pace and expressiveness and improved system-wide dictation, an area where Siri has trailed Gemini Live and ChatGPT Voice. Siri can also learn how a user communicates with different people, with Apple's example being a recognition that short bullet points are normally sent to a manager, and drafting accordingly.

Users can apply now by opening Settings, then Siri, where Siri AI (Beta) appears at the top of the screen. Tapping Join waitlist adds them to the queue, and a notification arrives when access becomes available.

Availability is also limited by region. Siri AI is not currently offered on iPhones or iPads in the European Union, although EU users can reach it on Macs and Vision Pro, and it is not available at all in mainland China for users whose Apple Account region is set to China.
