According to the report, this solves a problem keyboard users have long faced: when multiple apps are visible, there was no clear indicator of which app would receive keyboard shortcuts, sometimes causing commands to go to the wrong app. The Mac has long shown the active app's name in the top-left corner.

The second feature is an optional always-on menu bar. iPadOS 26 brought the menu bar to the iPad for the first time, but it only appeared when explicitly summoned. In iPadOS 27, a new toggle under Settings > Multitasking & Gestures, labeled "Automatically Show and Hide Menu Bar," lets users keep the menu bar visible at all times when turned off. The 9to5Mac writer, who tested the iPad this way during the beta, says it is one of their favorite changes this year.

The third area is speed. The report says context menus now open faster when using a cursor, and Apple says browsing files and transferring them to an external drive is now "up to 5x faster," which the company says makes it as fast as Finder on the Mac. Apps launch more responsively, and window management is faster when closing, switching, or dragging windows.
