iPhone 18 Pro Goes on Sale as Apple Adds Sensor-Signed Photo Verification to iOS 27
Apple began selling the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on Sept. 18, 2026, three days after iOS 27 and watchOS 27 arrived. The launch highlights a split in Apple's AI strategy: a generative reframing tool that can invent unseen people, and a sensor-signed Reference Image system meant to verify what the camera actually captured.
iOS 27 introduced Spatial Reframing, a generative photo-editing feature that lets users reframe an image by dragging the frame and simulating a camera movement to the side. Because the camera never moved, the system must generate pixels for areas the lens did not record. A Reddit user who used the feature on a photo of a horse said it added a man who was not in the original image, Aifanr reported. The original image contained a small object behind the horse that looked like a hat; after Spatial Reframing extended the frame upward, the feature rendered a man. TechRadar's tester also found that when processing buildings and busy streets, the AI sometimes added windows and ledges that did not exist.
In response, Apple is shipping Apple Reference Image on the iPhone 18 Pro series. It is an optional Reference capture mode. When enabled, the camera saves a DNG 'digital negative' signed directly by the sensor, recording raw pixels, sensor information and capture time, and binds it to the conventionally processed main photo. The main camera sensor generates a unique cryptographic identity at the factory and ties it to the phone's Secure Enclave. When the user presses the shutter, the sensor enters a special secure mode and signs the pixel data before firmware modifies the image; Private Cloud Compute then checks whether the sensor, phone and timestamp match. The system keeps an editable normal photo and a sensor-signed secure digital negative. The latter is not immediately a viewable Reference Image; only when verification is needed is it developed by Private Cloud Compute into a tamper-resistant reference image.
Apple's feature is not a watermark, according to Aifanr. It provides an independent reference for comparing what happened between the final photo and the sensor record. If a user later applies Spatial Reframing to the main photo, the album first shows the edited version. The pre-edit main photo remains in the non-destructive edit history, while the Reference Image is kept along a separate path and can be called up through a Reference marker. A single photo project can then contain three layers: the edited final image with the invented person; the unedited photo without that person; and the sensor-generated Reference Image, also without that person. Only the last can show that at the moment the shutter was pressed, the sensor never saw the person.
Apple released watchOS 27 on Sept. 15 alongside the other operating systems. Shaoshupai, which tested the update, reported a modest redesign and performance improvements, plus a Dynamic app grid that combines frequently used apps with recommendations, more context-aware Smart Stack suggestions based on time, location and usage, and a new single-finger pinch gesture. The gesture opens the currently selected Smart Stack widget; after entering Smart Stack with a double pinch, a silver highlight appears around the selected widget, and another pinch opens it. The gesture works only on widgets already present in Smart Stack, while the double-pinch gesture remains more general for paging in Settings or the app grid.
The update also merges Find Devices, Find Contacts and Find Items into a single Find app with a map background. Workout Buddy can now be used during workouts without an iPhone nearby, adding pace, distance and duration progress comparisons and drawing on workout history. Siri AI arrives on Apple Watch for the first time as an extension of iOS 27, with a dedicated app and support for continuing a conversation started on iPhone. Shaoshupai noted that Siri AI is not yet available in mainland China. Other changes include perimenopause and menopause support in Cycle Tracking, a revised setup process and child safety features for Apple Watch For Your Kids, faster Apple Music playback, step counts synchronized between Workout and Health, improved indoor running and walking distance estimates, battery optimization suggestions, improved water detection, Wi-Fi performance, faster app extension launches, a redesigned Watch app settings page on iPhone, sleep-mode time-zone changes, a Siri module watch face, and guest keys in Wallet.
watchOS 27 supports Apple Watch Series 9 (2023) and later models and requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27, according to Apple's website. Shaoshupai noted that the compatibility list includes Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, Ultra 3 and Apple Watch SE 3, leaving earlier models out.
