iPhone 18 Pro: Major camera upgrades, C2 modem, and September 18 release expected
iPhone 18 Pro expected Sept. 9 launch, Sept. 18 release, with major camera upgrades, C2 modem, and Dark Cherry color.
The upcoming Pro models are expected to see some of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in the lineup’s history, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Leaker Fixed Focus Digital said the main camera upgrade is “confirmed” and results in a more than 2mm increase in the aluminum alloy back panel, due to an enlarged main camera module. A variable aperture feature is anticipated, but the leaker’s hints suggest more substantial changes are in store. The camera upgrades follow last year’s iPhone 17 Pro, which brought an overhauled front camera and improved Telephoto, but left the main camera largely unchanged.
Apple is also expected to transition the iPhone 18 Pro to its in-house designed C2 modem, following the C1 in the iPhone 16e and C1X in the iPhone Air. The C2 is said to bring improved battery efficiency, a new “Limit Precise Location” privacy feature, and better reliability in difficult data conditions. Combined with the A20 Pro chip, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to deliver the best iPhone battery life ever. Regulatory filings indicate the Pro Max will have a roughly 10% larger physical battery, which could take battery life to a whole new level.
In terms of design, the new flagship color will be a Dark Cherry or burgundy shade, marking the first red color on a Pro model. Apple historically has avoided bold colors on Pro models, but last year’s Cosmic Orange became a hit, and the new shade could prove similarly popular. The Dynamic Island is also expected to be 35% smaller than the current version, a first for the iPhone.
While these details come from rumors and regulatory filings, the release date pattern is well established. Apple has consistently announced iPhones in the second week of September and released them the following Friday. Unless Apple deviates this year, September 18 is when customers can expect to receive their iPhone 18 Pro, with the iPhone Ultra possibly shipping later.
