iPhone 18 Pro Teardowns Show Reworked Cooling, a Smaller Dynamic Island and a 1,048-Yuan Battery Swap

The most substantial change concerns the A20 Pro. Apple moved the memory dies that were previously stacked on top of the SoC in package-on-package form to a position beside the chip and packaged together with it, an approach iFanr describes as similar to Mac chip packaging. The A20 Pro also now faces the vapor chamber instead of turning its back to it. Heat travels through a new thermally conductive metal foil into a vapor chamber that Apple says has three times the area of the previous generation; in the teardown it covers most of the interior and works with a graphite film spread across the back glass. According to iFanr, the practical results are longer sustained brightness under strong outdoor light, steadier frame rates in high-load games and more headroom for long high-bitrate recording.

The Dynamic Island has shrunk for the first time, giving the status bar more room and letting the system keep three Live Activities on screen at once. iFanr reports that the Face ID infrared camera was moved from the island to the top-left status bar area and placed beneath the display panel. To let infrared light pass through, the OLED pixels in that region were rebuilt into a sparser W-shaped arrangement. The trade-off is a slight softness at the edges of the clock text in the top-left corner. Reactions online are divided: some users say it is obvious at close range, others say they cannot see it at normal viewing distance, and some new owners have asked whether they received a defective panel. iFanr states that the effect is a deliberate design compromise rather than a manufacturing defect.

Screen protectors interact with the new layout. In its own tests, iFanr found that matte and privacy films block and scatter infrared light, slowing Face ID, and that a combined privacy-and-matte film prevented face enrollment outright and blocked unlocking even when applied after enrollment. The Japanese accessory brand NIMASO issued a notice saying it had received multiple reports of Face ID failures with anti-glare and matte films for the iPhone 18 series, pulled the products from its official channels and opened an investigation. iFanr suggests buyers choose AR anti-reflective films and avoid thick privacy or matte films that have no special light-transmitting treatment at the top-left corner.

The main camera gains a mechanical variable aperture for the first time, with four stops at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4. The teardown shows a mechanism of six laser-cut blades built into the lens module, unlike the externally mounted leaves used by some Android phones. Because the blades sit outside the actual lens elements rather than inside the optical group, closing the aperture at certain bright angles produces visible trapezoidal glare, and iFanr says the familiar night-time ghosting remains.

Repair access is mixed. REWA found that Apple's Repair Assistant now supports cross-device swaps of screen, battery and front and rear camera modules, which are recognized as Genuine after configuration, and that the back glass no longer requires pairing. But the NAND flash and power management chips sit between the two layers of the mainboard, which iFanr says makes the common route of buying a low-capacity model and upgrading storage later extremely risky. Apple's published out-of-warranty prices list screen replacement at 2,698 yuan for the Pro and 3,198 yuan for the Pro Max, battery replacement at 1,048 yuan for both, 79 yuan more than the previous generation and above 1,000 yuan for the first time, and other damage at 6,898 and 7,298 yuan. TechRadar reported that Apple hardware vice president Tom Marieb said seeing people put films on iPhone screens makes him uncomfortable.

Storage varies by capacity. iFanr found the 256GB models using TLC NAND, while its two 1TB units both used Toshiba QLC. Apple says a custom controller, dynamic caching and wear-leveling algorithms are used to close the gap with TLC in read-write behavior and longevity for tasks such as ProRes recording.

Modem sourcing differs by model and region. Apple's Canadian and Japanese spec pages list the Apple C2 modem for both the 18 Pro and the Pro Max, but a TechInsights teardown found the US iPhone 18 Pro Max still using Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80. Apple's US page shows C2 for the smaller model and leaves the Pro Max entry blank. Analyst John Gruber suggested Apple may still be honoring a Qualcomm supply agreement running to 2026 and keeping a proven part for North American 5G millimeter wave.

On the China variant, activating an eSIM forces the system to occupy physical SIM slot 2, so users can only choose SIM1 plus SIM2, SIM1 plus eSIM, or dual eSIM, and cannot freely decide which physical card goes dormant.

The Pro Max switches from a pouch battery to the steel-cased type used on the previous Pro, increasing battery volume by more than 10 percent and lifting rated capacity to 5,391 mAh, 568 mAh more than before. Because the single-cell energy exceeds the 20 Wh threshold used in air and logistics dangerous-goods rules, iOS adds a Prepare to Ship function that discharges the battery and caps charge at 80 percent for 14 days when a device is sent for repair, returned or traded in.
