iPhone can be turned into a Bluetooth controller for PC, Engadget guide says

According to Engadget, the setup relies on the Remote Gamepad app, available from the App Store, plus a companion program installed on a PC running macOS, Windows 10 or 11, or Linux. Both devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. After opening the app on both devices and setting the iPhone's connection type to Wi-Fi, the PC shows a QR code that the iPhone scans to establish the connection. The guide said the process works the same across all three operating systems.

The app offers three default layouts and lets users create custom layouts, with options to adjust haptic feedback, steering sensitivity and steering range. It is free to download, but free users face a 20-minute session limit and periodic ads. A $3 premium version removes the time limit.

Engadget cautioned that the iPhone cannot fully replace a dedicated Bluetooth gaming controller. Physical buttons and the overall design of a real controller provide a better experience than any app-based replacement, the outlet said. Still, the customizable layout could make the app valuable for people with disabilities who have difficulty using a physical controller.

For those who already own a console controller, Engadget recommended using it instead. Most console controllers, including PS4 and Xbox One models, can connect to a PC over Bluetooth, though earlier Xbox One controllers lack Bluetooth support.
