iPhone Duo Hinge Cooling Targets Foldable Thermal Throttling

Apple's iPhone Duo hinge contains a flexible graphite pipe that spreads heat when folded, Android Authority reports.

The approach addresses a longstanding problem for book-style foldables. When open, these devices offer a large surface area for heat dissipation. When closed, they stack the chassis, effectively doubling thickness while cutting the surface area available for cooling.

Android foldables have used graphite sheets in the display stack or on the chassis on either side of the spine, according to Android Authority. They have not typically used the spine itself as part of the cooling system.

Foldable makers have spent years balancing thinner profiles with flagship-grade processors. A flagship chip inside a compact folded sandwich can lead to aggressive thermal throttling, the report said.

According to the PCMag interview cited by Android Authority, the iPhone Duo's fold was one of the device's toughest thermal roadblocks. The flexible graphite pipe is designed to move heat between the two halves of the chassis when folded.

Android Authority described the hinge cooling as the breakthrough Android foldables need. It said Apple appears to have solved the folded thermal challenge on its first foldable by incorporating the hinge into the phone's cooling structure.

Apple's thermal and silicon engineering teams told PCMag that closing a book-style foldable stacks the chassis and reduces the area available for heat dissipation. If a flagship processor is trapped in that compact sandwich, the result can be aggressive thermal throttling, the report said.

Editor's Summary

Apple's iPhone Duo uses a flexible graphite pipe in its hinge, along with an unstacked A20 Pro SoC and vapor chamber, to spread heat when the phone is folded, according to Android Authority. Android foldables have typically used graphite sheets in the display stack or on the chassis but not in the spine, leaving the folded state as a thermal challenge. The report presents hinge cooling as a possible path for future Android foldables, though no performance data or adoption plans were provided.
