Jagex Announces Fourth RuneScape Game, Built on Unreal Engine

Jagex used its annual RuneFest convention to announce a fourth major RuneScape game, working title RS4, built in Unreal Engine. The studio says it will not replace existing titles and is still a few years away.

The minute-long trailer shows little of the game itself, though it indicates players will be able to ride and fight dragons. Jagex said it will reveal more details about RS4 next year.

The new title joins RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and RuneScape: Dragonwilds in the studio's lineup. Jagex said RS4 is not intended to replace any of the older games, explaining that it is "designing RS4 to sit alongside them as an additional way to experience RuneScape and the world of Gielinor."

RS4 remains set in the same world and takes place in the Sixth Age, years after the events of RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the studio's move into the open-world survival genre. Players will begin in the Ashenfall area, which was first revealed in Dragonwilds.

According to Polygon, RS4 was originally conceived as an expansion to RuneScape: Dragonwilds called Shadows of Ashenfall. The development process produced something closer to Jagex's earlier MMOs, leading the studio to pivot to a standalone game.

No release window was given. Jagex described RS4 as a "hugely ambitious project and the game is still a few years away."

Jagex also announced a RuneScape animated series, being developed by Lyrical Animation in partnership with the YouTuber MoistCr1TiKaL. The show is in the early stages of development, and Jagex plans to share more details next year.
