Jaguar unveils $130,500 Type 01 EV two years after rebrand backlash

Jaguar unveiled the Type 01, its first EV, two years after a rebrand backlash. U.S. prices start near $130,500.

The four-door Grand Tourer has an ultra-long bonnet, a low roofline, frameless doors and a camera in place of a rear window. It has a range of up to 450 miles and can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds. Jaguar presented the launch as a radical new direction for the company as it becomes a fully electric brand.

The rebrand in November 2024 preceded the Type 01 and prompted criticism. Jaguar posted a 30-second clip on X that featured models in brightly colored clothing and slogans including "live vivid," "delete ordinary" and "copy nothing." The ad did not show a car or the company's traditional cat logo. Elon Musk, the owner of X, asked: "Do you sell cars?" Jaguar defended the campaign, telling Sky News at the time that it wanted "to be bold and disruptive."

Jaguar is not alone among luxury carmakers introducing EVs. Italy's Ferrari and Britain's Bentley have also launched their first EV models this year, seeking to test wealthy buyers' appetite for going electric as luxury brands compete with cheaper Chinese car brands. The Type 01's price is significantly higher than previous comparable Jaguar models, CNBC reported.

The launch comes as Jaguar Land Rover continues to recover from a cyberattack that forced the company to halt production last year. It also comes one month after JLR announced it would cut 4,000 jobs as part of a major cost-cutting drive. The Type 01 is the company's most visible product move since those disruptions and the rebrand.
